Fen Research: Software/Games Developer

Java   C++   Gaming   Startup

Negotiable / Cambridge

Description

Rare opportunity to work as a software developer for an exciting new Cambridge based start-up, working on creating a ground breaking new product in the field of online games and user created content.

The Company
Fen Research was formed by Andrew Gower, and Jagex Ltd, the creators of RuneScape, in late 2010 to create a ground breaking and ambitious new product. Not content with creating the largest free MMO in the world, Andrew is eager to conquer a whole new arena with Fen.

At Fen it is about working on stimulating projects with great people. While we work hard, we enjoy our jobs, and also have regular out-of-the-office activities.

Fen is in the enviable position that whilst being a start-up, with the opportunity to get in at the start, the associated benefits of a small team, and without big company politics, it also offers the job security typically only found at larger companies. Fen is extremely well funded, and has the backing of 10 years of Jagex technology.

We are building the product with the time and determination to do things properly, we don't hack and ship. Andrew's previous creation RuneScape has been online and maintained for over 10 years and is still going strong due to diligent engineering from the start. Our new product is expected to have just as long a life span, and to be used as the foundation we will build upon for years to come. So engineering the product well is essential. No spaghetti code allowed!

The Role
You will work as part of a small elite development team to engineer and deliver the new product. You will have a chance to influence the design of the final product because at Fen we believe in taking the best ideas from everyone rather than dictating from the top.

Excellent knowledge of Java, C# or C++.
A relevant degree or equivalent qualification.
Good algorithm design skills.

Knowledge of SWT.
Experience with network programming.
Knowledge of Agile development practices such as Scrum.
Experience programming computer games (small or large, either as a hobby or professionally).
