Who are we looking for?

We're looking for a talented, creative and clever developer to join our team. As well as being a great developer with front-end web experience (javascript, CSS) you're a real enthusiast for things like open data and APIs. Your uniquely fun and challenging role will be to both create tools and services to help broad distribution of our service and to encourage developers and partners to work with us and inspire them to create cool and creative things. In addition you'll participate in the development of our core platform. As well as being a key contributor on the software side we expect you'll have a lot of ideas about new things we could do.

Who are we?

We're State - a startup in the social web space. We haven't launched yet so you won't find out too much about us just yet, but we're not far off. We're building a very large scale consumer service that is all about expressing opinions. We have a great team drawn from across the UK and Europe, Silicon Valley and India, with a lot of successful startup experience behind us, and some great backing.

ESSENTIAL

The core of the job is a great understanding of development for the modern web, backed up by a base of solid software engineering, and excellent communication skills. In addition the following are required:

Ruby on Rails expertise in a consumer web environment
Strong Javascript and front-end development expertise, ideally including mobile web experience and HTML5, CSS3
Visible presence in online communities around things like open data, hack days, open source software, visualisation (you probably tweet, have a blog, attend meetups)
Experience as a publisher of an API

DESIRABLE

We are a flexible team and so the work will be distributed differently depending on the skills of each new starter. However any of these would be generally very helpful and would complement what we have in the team already:

Distribution tools such as Facebook apps, Wordpress plugins, widgets of various forms
Knowledgeable about various popular developer platforms, APIs and services
Good API designer, understanding what REST is, when to use and when not to use it
Principled understanding of authorisation and authentication, privacy and security
Visualisation experience (please send examples) and the related tools such as Processing
Experience managing relationships with partners or affiliates and the various tracking and reporting tools
Geovisualisation (OK, putting stuff on maps) online and perhaps even interactive
Various standard web formats such as ATOM, RSS, KML
Knowledge of the world of the semantic web and that an RDF triple cannot be ordered in a pub
Organiser of meetups or events, geeky or otherwise
Strong computer science background or something related
NoSQL databases, ideally MongoDB
Experience working with large data sets
